Once a few years ago I read a webcomic short story about two people walking through a city in the future, a guy and a girl. Their path through the streets is guided by technology and they walk through these bright blue arches. One of them is anti-technology but the other is ok with it.

At one point the anti-tech character says “don’t go that way, it’s a sponsored detour” or something to that effect. Advertisements abound.

Anyone know what I’m talking about? I’d love to read it again!

While I agree with the fundamental sentiment here, I think the delivery could be improved. Stop chasing “fun” that is like eating sugar and realize the amazing awesome happiness from “fun” that is closer to a nice piece of fruit.

I mean, like, doing volunteer work etc. CLEARLY makes the volunteers really happy, for way longer than buying some item at a mall etc. I dunno hahaha figuring out long-term-happy things is really a life-long challenge but what a great one! :) <3

Friends of mine started a business teaching pop-music people how to enjoy classical music.:

They are professional classical musicians who also play Radiohead covers and more … experimental works with their strings.

They give seminars about classical music in a way that’s actually, really entertaining and instructive for “bored teenagers”.

They give music lessons in small groups so it’s actually affordable for non-wealthy families.

…They’re working to get financially independent right now. (With IndieGoGo they don’t need to meet the donation goal to get the money.) I love this group not just because they are my friends but also because they’re trying to get people interested in music and what makes music interesting, how to understand and explain that to everyday people, so they can understand the brilliance of modern music too, so they “get” Bach and so they “get” Pearl Jam.

I’ve been thinking about something…

From a neurological perspective, which is the one I choose to adhere to for reasons, the answer is pretty much that everything we feel has minute differences from moment to moment and person to person, but for the most part “sadness” looks the same, as do the rest of the cognitive experiences available to us. Barring, of course, exceptional cases.

It’s all about the structures in the brain that enable these experiences. My sadness and your sadness may be slightly different, but they’re both recognizably sadness, powered by sadness structures we both share.

Are you talking about the objective interpretation? Like, a particular ratio of various brain chemicals in a human brain will virtually always coincide with sadness? I’d equate this to how a particular wavelength hitting the eye will always be seen as “yellow”.

I’m interested in the subjective side: how does your “yellow” compare to my “yellow”? How does your “concerned” compare to my “concerned”? So I guess, you’re suggesting that because the brain chemistries are objectively going to be pretty similar (as evidenced through MRIs or whatever), the subjective experience would also be similar.

Bearing in mind, of course, that feelings generally only last a few moments. Then we have to remember why we’re angry/annoyed/jealous/excited to elicit that brain buzz again. :)

I’ve been thinking about something similar to this concept a lot lately. How our feelings are in our minds — and only in our minds. That doesn’t mean we aren’t actually having those feelings, not at all! But, that is where they are and that is as far as they go.

Further, just as my experience of the color purple might not be your experience of the color purple, the way I experience nostalgia or sadness or satisfaction might not be how you experience it. Though, this one is making me think a LOT.

To me everything can be interpreted as visual or colored, and various emotions could be, if I needed to share precisely an emotion, in theory be “exported” via a 2D-moving or 3D stationary color map. In theory (the way my brain works) we could “swap” emotional experiences this way.

I guess I had always had an unarticulated assumption that your color map for, say, “disappointment” wouldn’t be too far off from mine. Or “missing my best friend” would be the same, or perhaps the part of the colors for loneliness would be the nearly same but the parts referencing the particular friendship we each missed would vary.

But a week or two ago I was struck with the fact (saw a quote somewhere?) stating that we might just all feel things differently. Like, our color maps for a particular emotion might be vastly different. In fact, this made me realize that I even have these color maps for emotions.

What do you think? Do we feel “anger” or “anticipation” or “terribly full but desert looks delicious” in the same way, or at least the bulk would be similar enough? Or would our exported color maps be completely different and unrecognizable?
